UAF, Toolik Field Station join Arctic climate initiative

Bringing together experts from 14 institutions, the Evolving Meta-Ecosystems Institute will focus on improving scientific and public understanding of how Arctic ecosystems are responding -- and will continue to respond -- as their environment shifts.

Microplastics low and high in Alaska

A group of scientists from UAF's Water and Environmental Â鶹¹ÙÍø Center in 2020 and 2021 sampled snow and freshwater from more than 70 locations on a south-to-north transect, mostly along highways. Their recently published study showed plastic fragments everywhere they sampled, from the Kenai Peninsula to the North Slope.

Solar storm -- not HAARP -- creates intense auroral display

Night skies over the weekend erupted with vivid colors and awed people all around the globe as the solar wind from a severe geomagnetic storm produced by our sun entered Earth's upper atmosphere and created auroral displays. The spectacular aurora sparked questions about possible connections to recent experiments by the High-frequency Active Auroral Â鶹¹ÙÍø Program, or HAARP.
