Staff Recognition and Development Day afternoon course guide

Here are the course descriptions for the 2023 UAF Staff Recognition and Development Day afternoon breakout sessions.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for April 5 and for the breakout sessions you’d like to attend!

Building Your Leadership House
This version of Building Your Leadership House engagement will help you gain a greater sense of shared team identity and a shared group experience, insight into your leadership qualities and the kind of leader you want to become, and the foundations for defining a shared set of leadership and follower expectations, with time for group discussion.

You need to tell your story. Why?
Pundits to presidents and everyone in between can’t stop talking about how we all need to “tell our story.” What does that mean at UAF? How can strong branding launch your story from water cooler conversations to viral moments? Join UAF’s public affairs and marketing leads for an informal and interactive discussion about brand, public relations and how to share your unit’s work beyond the office walls. Bring your questions, challenges and ideas. We’ll spend most of our time together talking through real-world scenarios.

Fundraising and alumni engagement 101
Have you been tasked with engaging alums and/or raising private funds for your program or event? Join Morgan Dulian, UAF director of development, and Theresa Bakker, executive director of the UAF Alumni Association, to learn how you can leverage current tools and programs to raise awareness and attract donors to your program. We’ll cover the tools available to you and how to work with Development and Alumni Relations. We’ll focus on how Giving Day works, with examples of how staff leveraged the event to create success for their programs. You’ll also learn how to get involved with the 2023 alumni reunion.

Project management: Tools and tips
In this session, you will learn tools and tips to make planning and managing projects easier and more effective. They can be applied to any project regardless of the field or industry. When used in tandem with project management software, these tools and tips can help save time and reduce costs. We’ll focus on project management software/tools, workload control and project evaluations

Wellness your way: How to customize a healthy lifestyle
Create a healthy lifestyle to meet your own needs. Wellness is the state of being in good health. Using a holistic perspective, we’ll break down different aspects of wellness and provide tools and resources to help you pursue a healthier you.

Recruitment is for everyone
Recruitment is more than going to high school and college fairs. In this session, we'll focus on telling our personal UAF story and how that can work as an effective recruitment strategy in your day-to-day life. During the session you will learn about creating a one- to three-minute personal UAF story, get a chance to network and collaborate with other UAF community members, and find out about the kinds of recruitment UAF is already doing and how you can participate.

Process flow charting: Be the change
This session will explore process mapping. We'll discuss why process maps can be a tool to support change and make a complex process easier to understand. We'll also show you examples of how UAF teams have used flowcharting to record and improve processes. This hands-on session will get you up and moving around the room while you practice your mapping skills. You will learn how to map out a complicated process and create a flowchart, which resources are available at UAF to help with process improvements and what to do after recording a process to continually make improvements

Cybersecurity
Learn about spring cleaning your online life (for everyone) and how to look at your personal cybersecurity posture annually. The session will also cover spring cleaning your work life (for current employees). You’ll learn how to pursue cybersecurity hygiene both digitally and physically (e.g., records retention and destruction).
