Short film features CFOS alumna Sonia Ibarra
The American Indian Science and Engineering Society released a short documentary film about Â鶹¹ÙÍø Fairbanks Program Coordinator Sonia Ibarra after she was presented with the earlier this month. The award acknowledges individuals who have done substantial work for 10 or more years to advance programs and opportunities for Indigenous students and professionals.
Ibarra received a Ph.D. from UAF’s College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences in 2021. Her dissertation focused on co-creating a project with Tribes and Indigenous youth in Southeast Alaska to document a holistic picture of the relationship between Indigenous people, sea otters, and shellfish. She now coordinates the Tamamta program, which focuses on bridging Indigenous and Western sciences to transform graduate education and research in fisheries and marine sciences.
