Fairbanks: Our Homebase
Why Fairbanks?
Fairbanks is the perfect jumping-off point for thriving statewide research and education programs in oceanography, marine biology and fisheries. From the center of the state, we can easily access the Alaska coastline, lakes, rivers, and communities that serve as a learning and research platform for our students and faculty. Our central location at the Â鶹¹ÙÍø Fairbanks, Alaska’s only PhD-granting institution, allows our researchers and students to benefit from collaborations with other scientific programs on campus, including the Alaska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Â鶹¹ÙÍø Unit, the Geophysical Institute, and the International Arctic Â鶹¹ÙÍø Center. Our impact is global. Faculty conduct research all over Alaska and the world, and students can take a majority of our courses from just about anywhere using our state-of-the-art videoconferencing capabilities.
Myriad scientific disciplines are studied at the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) Fairbanks campus, ranging from freshwater and saltwater ecology to oceanography in the polar regions.
CFOS is located in the O’Neill, Irving II, Elvey, and Arctic Health Â鶹¹ÙÍø buildings. The CFOS Dean and central office, the Institute of Marine Science, Coastal Marine Institute, Academic Programs office, classrooms, and several faculty and graduate student offices and labs are located in the O’Neill building. Teaching and research labs, classrooms, and faculty offices for IMS and the Department of Fisheries are located in the Irving and Arctic Health Â鶹¹ÙÍø Building.
Approximately 25 tenure-track faculty, more than half of the CFOS graduate students, and nearly all the fisheries undergraduate students call Fairbanks home.
