Dear UAF faculty and staff,

As many of you are aware, there are multiple wildfires burning throughout Alaska. In Interior Alaska, air quality has deteriorated as smoke from those wildfires has settled in the Tanana Valley. While air quality is good at UAF locations outside of Fairbanks, that could change as wind shifts or new fires start.

Here are some sources of information about staying safe in smoky conditions:

  • (contains links to local air quality information)

Facilities Services is working to optimize building ventilation systems to mitigate the smoke as much as possible. The office of Environmental Health, Safety, and Risk Management (EHSRM) office recommends the use of N95 masks which are very helpful for reducing exposure to particulate matter, and are available for individuals who want them. In Fairbanks, they can be picked up at the EHSRM office at 825 Alumni Drive, main entrance facing the Power Plant; open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through July 1. Please note that offices are closed July 4-5, and hours may be limited on July 6 due to the holiday. For rural campuses, please contact EHSRM for assistance with acquiring N95 masks.

If you have specific concerns about smoky conditions in your work space, and/or need to work remotely, please work with your supervisor. Our Environmental Health, Safety, and Risk Management office and Facilities Services team are working together to mitigate the smoky conditions.

Thank you for choosing UAF.

— Dan White, chancellor
