Dr. Yuri Shur
Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Emeritus
WHEREAS Dr. Yuri Shur has served the Â鶹¹ÙÍø Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and service from 1992 to 1995 and from 2001 to 2024; and
WHEREAS Dr. Shur has been a highly influential and well-regarded teacher, an invaluable mentor and, while at UAF, the chair of four doctoral and six master’s student committees; and
WHEREAS Dr. Shur has had a remarkable 60-year career in engineering and research related to cold-region soils and permafrost, starting in the 1960s in Russia and the U.S. in 1991; and he has produced more than fifty refereed journal articles, six book chapters and more than one hundred conference abstracts and presentations; and his 2007 paper on permafrost has been one of the most influential works in the field in recent decades; and
WHEREAS Dr. Shur served as president of the U.S. Permafrost Association and founded its engineering education program; and he contributed to the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Technical Council on Cold Regions Engineering; and he has served as a reviewer and editorial board member of multiple journals;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Â鶹¹ÙÍø Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Yuri Shur for his extensive contributions to the state of Alaska and to the university; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Â鶹¹ÙÍø Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Shur and as evidence of the university’s desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Yuri Shur as professor of civil and environmental engineering, emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the Â鶹¹ÙÍø Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Yuri Shur, and conveyed to Dr. Shur on this third day of May, 2024.
