Dreaming of Alaska: The Journey from Hungary to Fairbanks
Gyorgyi Miklos is a UAF School of Management student pursuing her Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in marketing. Originally from Hungary, it was Gyorgyi’s childhood dream to travel to Alaska. That dream was realized in 2011, with her first trip to Alaska followed by several more visits to the United States in the years following. Gyorgyi decided to move to Fairbanks and in 2019 she began attending UAF.
Gyorgyi will be graduating in December 2020. She hopes her academic training in marketing, along with her sales and marketing experience, will help her prepare for her future career path. She hopes to pursue a product manager position in the pharmaceutical industry, or any similar role that requires leadership and offers opportunities for growth.
Gyorgyi was the second recipient of the Milner Marketing Scholarship. The Milner Marketing Scholarship is an academic merit scholarship that requires the recipient to have a GPA of 3.5 or higher with a concentration in marketing. For Gyorgyi, this scholarship made a big difference in her education. By reducing financial concerns, this scholarship meant more time for studying. This was important because it allowed Gyorgyi to maintain her 4.0 GPA and get the most out of her classes.
Her hard work to maintain a 4.0 GPA placed Gyorgyi on the Chancellor’s List and secured her spot in the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society.
During her time at School of Management, Gyorgyi has enjoyed many different aspects of her education. She considers the ability to learn from outstanding instructors and build personal and professional relationships with her peers a crucial part of her education. She gets to work on interesting projects with people who have diverse perspectives. Gyorgyi looks at her education at UAF in a positive light and is excited about what the future will bring.
“I believe projects with measurable outcomes have the greatest potential for helping students. After working on this project, I'm more confident with real-world challenges companies are facing and the experience helped me with problem-solving skills,’ says Gyorgyi. “SOM is a great community. At SOM, every student matters, every single person has a story worth telling, and we learn from diverse perspectives.â€
